SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - After starting the season with an extremely impressive 2-0 shutout against the San Jose, the team with the best regular season record in 2012, Real Salt Lake has to be happy with the way the way their season has started.
Well, happy may be an overstatement.
"It's was good, not great, not pefect, not anywhere close to it," said head coach Jason Kreis. "I think it's a lot of stuff to build off of is the way I like to say it."
"I think we still have to iron out a lot of things," said goalkeeper Nick Rimando. "It wasn't perfect by any means, but we got the job done."
Other RSL players were a little more excited about the season-opening victory.
"It feels great to be honest," said midfielder Sebastian Velasquez. "It's huge for us. We were all celebrating in the locker room. I mean, it's not easy to come out of San Jose with three points."
Alvaro Saborio will get the headlines because of the two goals he scored, but RSL really won the game with defense, shutting down the high-powered San Jose attack.
"I think the biggest thing we take pride in is the defensive part of our game," said Velasquez. "We have very talented players on the field, but if we can get them to defend as a team, we're going to be a lot better."
The shutout was Rimando's 100th of his career, a milestone reached by just one other goalkeeper in MLS history.
"Whenever you get a shutout, you take it," said Rimando, who trails Kevin Hartman by 12 shutouts for the all-time record. "Obviously, I would have liked to have it in front of my home fans, but I liked getting it at San Jose because they do have a lot of firepower."
"I think it should be recognized, celebrated, respected and appreciated by all of us," said Kreis. "It's big-time."
So now it's on to D.C. United, where in eight tries, Real Salt Lake has never come home with a victory at RFK Stadium.
"That would be awesome to get some more points," said defender Chris Schuler. "I didn't know that. There's a lot of those little stats everywhere. But it would be great to get those points. We're going to go in there, listen to Jason and bring the fight."
You can watch RSL take on D.C. United Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. mountain time on ABC 4.
