SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Police in what's called the Joint Criminal Apprehension Team shot and killed man in Salt Lake City after a 90 minute standoff Tuesday afternoon. That's just one of several questions we're still trying to answer tonight. Right now police aren't releasing his identity. It's unclear if they even know who he is.
I'm not sure if you can see this at home but if you look behind me police are still here. It's been 5 hours after this standoff ended and investigators are trying to get answers too.
The standoff started Tuesday around 4:00 p.m. as dozens of police swarmed a neighborhood off Main Street and 11th South in Salt Lake City.
"What do you think of this? Pretty scary," said Julio Chacon, evacuated from the neighborhood.
"It was scary," said another man forced to evacuate.
Police evacuated the neighborhood, including an Acura car dealership next door. JCAT was looking for a fugitive violating his parole. But when they arrived at the house, another man started shooting at the officers.
"The officers returned fire and put him down," said Sgt. Shawn Josephson, Salt Lake City Police.
The man was rushed to hospital. And while officers negotiated with the fugitive and others to give up peacefully, police learned the shooter was dead.
"He is deceased, he has died," Sgt. Josephson told reporters.
Workers at the car dealership said they heard the gun fire.
"There was four or five pops and then the ATF, U.S. Marshalls came inside the building and told us to get out," said Patrick Meriwether, Acura dealership worker.
Their building was right behind the standoff. When workers went back inside the dealership they found several bullet holes in their parts garage.
"The insulation from the door is scattered all over the floor," said Meriwether.
"So this is a bullet that came through your door right there?" Reporter Brian Carlson asked.
"Sure looks like it," Meriwether said.
The bullets are just a fragment of what was left from the violent scene. It took officers roughly an hour and half to bring the standoff to a close, and in the end police got what they came for.
"The one individual we were looking for, or JCAT was looking for, was taken into custody," said Sgt. Josephson.
ABC 4 is told police arrested two other people in addition to the fugitive. Tonight it's unclear who any of those people are, or why they may have been hiding from police. We should find out more information after they're each booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
