SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A elderly man died Tuesday morning after being trapped underneath a bus.
The man was later identified as Richard Wirick, a prominent downtown business owner. Wirick founded The Oxford Shop shoe repair business in the early 1950s.
The crash happened in the downtown area at about 7:30 a.m. on 200 East 400 South, where traffic was diverted, causing a lot of congestion.
A UTA official said Wirick was hit by a bus that was out of service.
UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the driver was placed on administrative leave and would be screened for drugs and alcohol as per company policy.
Carpenter said the driver would also be offered counseling as needed.
According to Carpenter, the driver had just dropped off a load of passengers from Weber County and was headed back to the UTA garage for service when the crash happened.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
