WEBER COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - The Weber School District is installing 1,000 cameras in all of its school buildings. They'll send back live feeds to the Real Time Crime Center in the Ogden Police Department.
The Ogden Police Department opened the RTCC two and a half years ago. It's designed to take camera feeds from anywhere in the world to increase communications during a disaster situation.
The Weber School District is paying $550,000 to install 1,000 live camera signals to the room.
"That's a lot of cameras to keep an eye on all the time, but one of the things we can do is cross reference a lot of stuff that's being displayed to us. We can provide information back out to our offices," said Detective Nicholas Poorte of the Ogden Police Department.
The room becomes command central for communications should a Sandy Hook or Columbine-like tragedy unfold in a Weber School District.
"The primary purpose is to give us access in the event of some major catastrophe," Deputy Director Ogden Police Department, John Harvey.
Ogden detectives will have access to all the camera feeds. They'll also have information about the location of gas mains, water lines and power lines.
The information would allow police to control the inside of the building from the outside. The RTCC could also pull up vital information like where to evacuate students in the middle of a disaster situation.
"Even an officer on the ground in that location could pull that particular camera up via mobile device or iPad from the car," said Harvey.
