EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Hundreds of residents packed Eagle Mountain City Hall wanting answers about the recent spike in utility bills.

“I think it’s awesome that people care enough to show up,” Corrine Ceran said.

Ceran was one of several folks not allowed inside the meeting because the building was so packed. The Fire Marshal said it was a safety hazard and people were slowly let in as others left.

City council members said residents’ concerns are not falling on deaf ears.

In a presentation, City Administrator Ifo Pili said many factors are contributing to the spike. Pili said some residents have a higher usage, there may be problems with the city’s reading system, others may have carry over charges or their meter was misread either by technology or human error.

Pili said he has learned the city needs to communicate better with residents to help them understand where their money is going.

The city passed out rate comparison sheet showing Eagle Mountain’s current utility fees and taxes compared to surrounding cities, but not everyone was pleased.

“It doesn’t tell us anything we want to know really,” Laura Andreasen, a resident said.

Andreasen said she expected to hear lots of information, but left with few answers.

“Everything they have said we already knew they were going to say,” she said. “We came in knowing they were going to give us the same excuses.”

The city stressed they are doing their best to be transparent and honest with citizens.

They have posted the full presentation for residents who were not able to attend the meeting on the Eagle Mountain City’s website.

It's not about a high month or recent spike in utilities. It is the fact that Eagle Mountain residences pay significantly higher rates than comparably cities in the valley! Also, the face that the funds collected from utilities in Eagle Mountain are misused!!!
