WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – There are still strong local efforts to find Susan Powell in her hometown.
Her best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell has organized a “Honk and Wave” to make sure people never forget Susan.
The “Honk and Wave” will be headquartered at 3500 S and 5600 W in West Valley City. It’s been planned for several days and it’s aimed at keeping Susan Powell’s name on people’s minds so they never forget to keep trying to find her.
“You can't give up hope on someone that you love so much. And if you quit looking and quit searching and quit doing everything you can to try and find her then you just want to collapse and die,” said Hellewell.
Hellewell has worked day in and day out to try and find her best friend. Saturday’s “Honk and Wave” is just one more example.
“There's the part of me that is desperate to find my friend who can't stand the thought of her being gone. But, I can't think about that very much because then I can't function,” said Hellewell.
Instead, Kiirsi works as an online chaperone for Susan. She takes tips and monitors sites like twitter and facebook to make sure no one stops fighting for closure. She also organizes events like the “Honk and Wave” in hopes of reminding hunters and other people headed to the wilderness to keep their eyes peeled for any clues.
“Because she is still out there somewhere and until police find her and we get the answers that we need, we need everybody looking for her,” said Hellewell.
So if you’re driving through West Valley City tomorrow, don’t forget to give a friendly honk and wave. If you’d like to do more than just a drive by, Kiirsi welcomes extra support to hold signs and banners. She says Susan would have done the same for her.
“I would say, Susan we love you so much and we have never stopped looking for you. And we never will until we find you and bring you home and make sure your boys are safe,” said Hellewell.
The “Honk and Wave” is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, August 20th.
