SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Recovering at St. Mark's Hospital, Daniel Samuelsen is grateful to be in a warm bed. The 33-year-old spent three nights alone, trapped in a tunnel in the foothills east of Salt Lake City.

He says he went hiking Wednesday morning when he fell into the tunnel near the mouth of Parleys Canyon.

Samuelsen broke his leg in the fall. His cell phone was dead. So he found a rock and banged on the tunnel’s walls. No one heard his screams and he started to wonder how long he’d be trapped.

“I thought I was going to die,” he said.

He says four days passed and by Saturday afternoon without any food or water since the fall, he had to do something. That's when he began to crawl and two hours later he saw a man on the highway.

“I’ve never been happier to see a human being in my life,” said Samuelsen.

Doctors said Samuelsen broke his leg in several places and because the wound was open for four days his right leg may need to be amputated.
