SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - For Utah Republicans, Jim Matheson is like the scary monster in a horror movie. Every time they try to kill him off, he not only survives but seems to come back to life even stronger.

Wednesday, Matheson told ABC 4 this about his late night, dramatic victory over Republican Mia Love in Utah's new 4th Congressional District,

"I am not really surprised. I saw this one from the minute the district was drawn. It was going to be close and I planned accordingly."

Matheson is a numbers guy. He saw where he his ground game could steal votes from Mia Love and the best issues to help separate them.

Also, in dispatching a well funded, nationally recognized opponent, Matheson gets a bite of Republican revenge. Twice now, Utah's Republican legislature has drawn new political boundaries to get rid of Matheson.

Twice it has failed.

And in so doing, Matheson has now run and won all over the state. This is a fact which could help Matheson if he ever runs for governor or senator.

So, we asked him,

"Have the Republican plans backfired?”

To which he replied with, perhaps, a bit of a smile,

“Well, you never know. We'll see."
