TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) Agree or disagree... the President's proposal to control guns got a lot of buzz Wednesday. Opinions vary, even among gun owners themselves.
Lenny Nelson owns an assault rifle, which he shoots only for fun, he says like most people he knows. So the President's proposal to ban them doesn't make sense.
“It sound like he's targeting the wrong children here,” said Nelson. “People who own weapons and are responsible for them, what difference does it make? A criminal does not care what the rules are.”
Then there's Jordan Smith, another proud gun owner, but he doesn't see a need for anybody to own an assault weapon. “I think those weapons should only be accessible to military on orders to go overseas.”
Opinions also run the gamut when it comes to Pres. Obama's proposal to limit magazine rounds to ten.
“I think it's a great idea,” said Smith. “No civilian needs an extended round magazine, I can't think of anything you would do for safety measures or hunting that you would need more than 30 rounds for.”
But Nelson, disagrees. “If you have 3 or 4 people breaking into your house do you want to be limited to a seven-round magazine?” he said. “I don't want to be changing magazines amid ship while someone is coming at me.”
Congress needs to approve the assault weapons ban and magazine limits. The majority of the country seems to agree with the President. A new ABC News-Washington Post poll out this week finds 52 percent support stricter gun control measures.
