COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police say a traffic stop led to a standoff at a home in Cottonwood Heights early Friday morning.

According to police, an officer pulled E.J. Poplawski over, who was driving a gray Nissan truck early Friday morning. Police say Poplawski sped away during the traffic stop, and officers opted not to pursue him.

Police were able to trace the license plate to a home at 7226 South 1600 East in Cottonwood Heights, where they discovered the truck and a gun on the ground next to it. Officers then made contact with Jason Ray, one of Poplawski's roommates.

Police say officers noticed several drug paraphernalia inside the home as well.

According to police, Poplawski refused to come out, and a SWAT team was called in.

SWAT team members eventually used tear gas, and Poplawski surrendered.

Poplawski is a former world-class skier who lost his leg in a ski crash a few years ago.

Ray, who was on federal probation for a previous conviction was also arrested.
