KEARNS, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A Two alarm house fire nearly kills a man in Kearns Friday morning. The man became trapped inside as it began to fill with smoke. He was rescued by responders.

It started just after 9:00 a.m., as a fire quickly burned through a home near 49th W. 53rd S. in Kearns.

"I’ve seen all this black smoke coming up and we knew it was one of our neighbors," said Oliver Price, Neighbor.

"It was one of the scariest things I've ever seen," said Robin Kirton, Neighbor.

Neighbors said the homeowners were cooking with oil, when it burst into flames. An elderly woman inside escaped, but her adult son became trapped in the basement. And he began breathing in smoke billowing from the fire. Fire fighters said the man trapped inside was able to call from a phone and tell responders exactly where he was. They said there's a good chance that it may have saved his life.

It took more than 30 firefighters to put out the blaze, but not before crews said flames did significant damage inside.

"It's a real tragedy to see somebody lose everything you own," said Ken Jones, Neighbor.

For the time being fire fighters said the family will have to find another place to live. Crews tell ABC 4 the man rescued from the fire, was taken to the hospital in stable condition. He suffered cuts on his hands from broken glass, and smoke inhalation.
