LOGAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - It has only been a few days since the call went out for an April 10th search of Utah's west desert for clues to the disappearance of Susan Powell and already, a few hundred have volunteered. Many of the volunteers bring with them special skills. They're firefighters, EMT's, police and ex-military. They know how to conduct an effective search.
Among these professionals who are volunteering, 12 men and women with Bridgerland Fire of Cache Valley. Bridgerland's chief, John Watkins said, "If it was my family, I'd want the same thing -- the community to pull together and help out." A member of his crew, Derrick Vigil added, "I think my team and I just want to put our training to good use."
Chris Willden is putting together another team from Strategic Tactical Group. Not only are they bringing with them their "go packs", radios and laptops, they're also providing a small trailer that can act as a command post. Their time and equipment are all being donated to the cause of finding Susan. Willden said, "We're probably into it -- with what we're going to be having out there -- probably a thousand dollars."
Search coordinators are thrilled with all of the experience, but they do not want to discourage anyone who wants to volunteer. Joanne Bentley said, "We can take anybody who is healthy and is in good physical condition and has the right mental attitude to be out here searching."
Just remember, there is no corner convenience store in the desert. The rule is: If you will need it, bring it.
