WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A horrific accident brought a Salt Lake City police officer hero and a victim together again on national TV.
Good Morning America was at the scene Thursday night to talk with Officer Kevin Peck about the day of the bus accident. His interview will air Friday morning, but ABC 4 has the sneak peek.
A scene of chaos unfolded Monday afternoon. Cathy Geis, a witness, said, "Her knee is really gone, you can see the bone sticking out and everything." Bypassers stood in shock at the sight of 24-year-old Aryann Smith, pinned under the front wheel of a UTA bus.
Jonathan Logan, a witness, said, "She said, 'someone hold my hand,' cause of the pain." Smith's legs were both broken. Scared, she called out for help from the strangers around her.
That's where the heroic story begins. Officer Kevin Peck crawled under the bus and comforted the young mother until rescue crew were able to pull her out.
Peck couldn't get the event off his mind, so he visited Smith in the hospital, just days later. He said, "It was good for me to see her...see how she's recovering. It was just a great experience."
ABC 4's Kim Fischer was told that Smith has been moved from intensive care to post-op recovery. Peck said he was happy to see how she's improved in a short amount of time.
