LINDON, Utah (ABC 4 News)- The Utah Department of Public Safety says a Lindon man used his dead son’s ID to buy a home.

63-year-old David Frank Pflegl was arrested Thursday for allegedly using his deceased son’s name, date of birth and social security number for at least the last 15 years. Agent Scott Nesbitt of the Utah Department of Public Safety says,” I can't think of one other case besides this one where someone has assumed the identity of one of their kids, especially that's been deceased.”

Nesbitt says Pflegl's son David Frank Pflegl II died in a 1987 in a car crash in Canada. Nesbitt says since 1995 Pflegl has been using his son's identity including his name to get a vehicle title, fishing and hunting licenses and driver’s licenses.

Nesbitt says Pflegl secured a 140-thousand dollar loan for a house in Lindon. Nesbitt says he got a break in the case when the Oregon State Police found out Pflegl got a driver’s license there. Nesbitt said,” And they also discovered during that investigation that he had also obtained a passport with his son's identity. “

The US State Department handles passports. After they became involved, they asked Utah to check into Pflegl's alleged crimes in the Beehive State. Among other charges against Pflegl are communications fraud and identity theft. Nesbitt says Pflegl could face federal charges in Utah. Pflegl is in the Utah County Jail on a $5,000 cash or bond bail.
