SPRINGVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – The Springville community is mourning the loss of a two year old boy who accidentally shot and killed himself with a gun. His parents both work for the city, and his father is a police officer.
Bells playing at Springville City Hall took on a new meaning Wednesday night. During the day, the bells play the tune “Simple Gifts.”
Wednesday two Springville city workers are mourning one of theirs.
On Tuesday, ABC 4 was told that the 2-year-old son of a Springville police officer shot and killed himself with a handgun.
“My heart goes out to the parents,” said Tim Taylor, Chief Deputy Attorney, Utah County Attorney’s Office.
The Utah County Attorney’s Office said details are scarce, but ABC 4 was told that the boy shot himself at home, and both parents were believed to be home at the time.
Utah County is looking into the incident because they said it’s too painful for anyone in the Springville offices to investigate.
“You can imagine that you have Springville police officers coming upon the scene where they know the family. My understanding is it’s pretty difficult for them to see this and go through it,” said Taylor.
Other Springville parents ABC 4 spoke with share their pain.
“It’s devastating,” said Trakell Davis, Springville parent.
“It’s unfortunate, said Jake Schnakenburg, Springville parent.
“My heart just brakes for the family,” said Nicole Porray, Springville parent.
Although the city isn’t saying much about the boy’s death, including who the gun belonged to, and how the child found it, like the bells – employees are getting through the day one note at a time.
