TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified the 14-year-old student who shot himself outside his school in the Salt Lake City suburb of Taylorsville.

Unified Police say David Q. Phan committed suicide Thursday on a corner of the school grounds in front of several other students.

Granite School District released a statement saying Phan had been in counseling for significant personal issues.

However, the student previously denied reports now circulating on social media that he had been subject to bullying.

Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley confirms that Phan was released early from Bennion Junior High at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Horsley says he can't discuss the reasons for the early dismissal.

Police say Phan went home, retrieved a gun and returned to a corner of the school grounds.

Was this bullying by Mormons because he was gay? If in Utah, that is likely enough that the article should answer the question one way or another. If you got your news from KSL or Mormon sources...it is washed clean.

1. Why wasn't he released to an adult who could be responsible for him? 2. That privacy laws prevent the school from releasing information about why he was receiving counseling, wouldn't those same laws prevent release of that service being provided? The only way the school can release such information is if it isn't true or is misleading. His parents have the right to request and receive those counseling files. It's the school that's bound by privacy laws (which they violated by saying he was in counseling for significant issues) ... the parent can share that information on the evening news if they so choose.
