SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - ABC 4 (KTVX) is joining forces with the Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross to raise funds to help families displaced by the devastating wildfires.

ABC 4 viewers can contribute by making phone donations via a live phone bank during the 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. newscasts on Thursday.

Red Cross volunteers will be staffing phone lines at ABC 4 between 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

You can donate by calling 801-975-GIVE (801-975-4483) or by visiting the utahredcross.org telethon donation page.

Wildfires across the state have caused massive damage, and left some families homeless.

"It's really a lot like taking 500 people camping with two hours notice," said Teresa Zundel, spokeswoman for The American Red Cross Utah Region. "Only there's no end date to the camping trip."

Since June 29th, The Utah Red Cross has assisted nearly 1500 evacuees at five different shelters.

Online donation information can be found at www.utahredcross.org

After several large fires caused by shooting guns outdoors here in Utah, gun rights advocates here are claiming that restrictions on outdoors shooting are a slippery slope to... what exactly? Less accidents, maiming, killing, property damage and fires? They say we should rely on the good judgement of gun owners/users and punish individuals only if they act irresponsibly and cause a fire. But we already know that gun rights advocates are irresponsible when they argue against and block all reasonable gun restrictions. This irresponsibility also extends to their own gun ownership and use. Punishing gun shooters only after they've caused a wildfire, especially when most do all they can to not get identified or caught, will be completely ineffective in reducing wildfires caused by these inherently irresponsible gun nuts. Our Founding Fathers never intended that this country would adopt this kind of grotesque misinterpretation of the 2nd Amendment.
