TAYLORSVILLE LUtah (ABC 4 News) - Fourteen year old David Phan liked guns and army gear.
Ironically that kind of expertise made it easier for him to kill himself.
Phan was a oth grader at Bennion Jr. High. He killed himself in front of three students Thursday afternoon.
"It would be traumatic for anybody to witness something that seriolus but for classmates and kids that age to witness something that horrific is just devastating," says Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.
Friday, students at his school wore blue out of respect for David.
"Everyone was all sad," says Maizy Burbank.
But what caused David to take his own life is unanswered. But most believe he was bullied.
Two years ago, school officials say his mother and David approached the principal for help.
"He was getting help and was being watched," says Ben Horsley of the Granite School District.
A year later, he says the school continued to keep tabs on him.
"David had approached a counselor a year ago and she continued to follow him on a regular basis, specifclly asking him are you being bullied," says Horsley. "David declined to report any instances and he was doing well."
He says there have been no one coming forward telling school officials of any recent troubles.
One student who knew David through her brother says he was being bullied.
"They would make fun of him the way he was," says Tapu Tafuna. "He was interested in guns and kept saying when he grows up he wanted to be in the army and would wear army clothes to school too.
And finding a gun wasn't a problem for David.
According to police David left school with his mother and then 90-minutes later returned alone.
He walked onto a skywalk that borders the southern border of the school. And that's when he shot himself in front of three of his classmates.
The gun came from home.
"They kept that gun in a safe and didn't think anyone could gain access to it but David got it," says Lt. Hoyal.
