Painting a room is a fairly simple procedure. As a rule, the walls are painted with a flat latex, while the trim is done in a semigloss latex or alkyd (AL-kid) enamel. Kitchens and bathrooms are sometimes done entirely with enamel because of its greater resistance to stains and moisture. Do the trim first, carefully painting the door and window frames with a brush. Don't worry about getting paint on the face of the walls; you'll be painting over that anyway. Once the trim is dry, it's time to paint the walls themselves. Start by outlining all the trim with a brush. Paint a strip about six inches wide around all the enameled areas. This is called 'cutting in.' Finally, use a roller to paint the large expanses of the wall. If you have the type that automatically feeds paint to the roller head, the job will go much faster.
