What to do about pain

Story Comments Share
When you begin orthodontic treatment, separators are put between teeth to make room for the later attachment of bands. The placement of separators usually will cause some pain, as will the placement of the bands and brackets when your braces are first put on. Each time you visit the orthodontist for adjustments, you can expect some discomfort for a few days afterward. You have several options to reduce pain during the adjustment period of your new braces. You may want to eat softer foods, such as yogurt and pasta, to minimize chewing discomfort. Warm saltwater rinsed in the mouth can sometimes ease pain. Aspirin or aspirin substitutes are also helpful in relieving the soreness associated with braces. If you suddenly get sore during a period that doesn't immediately follow an adjustment to your braces, call your orthodontist because it's unusual for teeth to hurt several weeks after an office visit. Contact your orthodontist for any more questions you may have about pain associated with orthodontic treatment.
