Chiropractic and the natural high

Your body has the ability to release chemicals that can alter your mood and the major systems within your body. The most common chemicals associated with this response are called endorphins (en-DORF-ins), which are produced naturally in the body. Some refer to the body's response to these chemicals as the 'natural high,' because they can make you feel euphoric and ease pain. How or when your body knows to release these chemicals isn't fully understood, but there seems to be a connection with endorphin release and muscle stimulation. Endorphins are released in your brain after physical exercise, and are the cause of what's often called the 'runner's high.' Massages and stretching can stimulate these chemicals, too. A chiropractic session may also signal your body to release endorphins. As the chiropractor manipulates your muscles, ligaments, and joints, you may feel more relaxed or happier than you were before the session. You may even experience pain relief as a result of the endorphin release. In fact, many patients report an improvement in mood and a more relaxed feeling after a chiropractic session. Though more studies are being done on this effect of chiropractic care, you may want to try it if you're experiencing pain caused by tense muscles, such as tension headaches, neck and shoulder pain, or lower back pain.
