About foot drop

Story Comments Share
Paralysis, nerve damage, or injury to the muscles on the side of the shinbone can produce a condition known as 'foot drop.' Without the support of these muscles, the foot becomes limp, the toes may drag, and normal walking becomes impossible. Unless there is significant permanent damage, correcting the muscle problem can relieve the condition, along with a physical therapy program. If this is not possible, there are two types of treatment available. One is a splint or specially designed boot to stiffen the ankle and provide support. The surgical alternative is a procedure called arthrodesis (ar-thro-DEE-sis), which fuses the bones together to stiffen the ankle with the foot at a right angle to the leg. A foot specialist in your area can provide you with more information concerning foot drop.
