SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - Actor/comedian Bill Murray has obviously accomplished a lot during his illustrious career. But his most important achievement has to be when he was co-owner of the Salt Lake Trappers when they set the professional baseball league record with 29 consecutive wins in 1987.
So where does that record, which still stands today, deserve to be placed in sports history? Just behind Joe DiMaggio's 56-game winning streak perhaps?
"That's not for me to say," said Murray, who was part of the 25-year anniversary celebration at Spring Mobile Ballpark Thursday night. "The DiMaggio family and I don't see eye-to-eye on this issue. I don't want to get into it with those people. But in terms of Utah sports, I would say it's number one."
Murray is still extremely proud to this day of what the Trappers, a rookie ball team in the Pioneer League, accomplished.
"We were sort of an outpost here," he said. "When we first started to get it going, we had to create enthusiasm for the team, and we did. We won the championship our first year. We sort of stuck together a lot, so we spent a fair amount of time in the bar."
In fact, Murray was called on to bartend on a few occasions.
"Well, in an emergency, you want to be able to step in," he said. "It takes a village sometimes. You know, we're out here in the wild west and things happen. If a wagon wheel breaks, someone has got to tend bar."
Asked what his favorite sports movie is, Murray replied, "Space Jam. When we fought against those cartoon characters from outer space, talk about importance in terms of the planet, come on."
