What does Christmas really mean? To many different people, it means many different things. But to Reverend France Davis it means giving back and focusing on the true spirit of Christmas. He goes On the Record to talk about the upcoming season.
“It not just about giving gifts,” but giving a the gift of a smile. Reverend Davis says that society focuses on the economic part, and that’s really a tragedy.
So on this Christmas season, "we have an obligation to love on another," Davis says.
Many wonder where someone like Reverend Davis gets his inspiration. He says it's from a variety of sources. He turns to other pastors, family, and close friends. But to God most of all for advice.
"Martin Luther King was one of my mentors," Davis says. But in this day and age, he's discovering that many young people don't know hardly anything about him. "I see that as an opportunity to educate."
At this time of year, Reverend Davis says that his favorite hymn is Joy to the World, the Lord is Come, and also Go tell it on the Mountain.
The Calvary Baptist Church is located at 1190 S. State Street in Salt Lake City. This year, Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, and Reverend Davis is giving two sermons the day after.
“It’s a place to participate, not to watch,” Reverend Davis says.
