A new documentary premiering Monday January 31st on KUED brings to light an issue that often is swept under the rug: homeless veterans. The film's writer and creator go On the Record to try to bring the issue to light.
The film is called Street Vets. Over the course of a year, filmmaker Issac Goeckeritz followed 10 men around and found out the amazing stories of these men that served their country, but are now homeless. Many served in the Vietnam war. And one of the shocking statistics is that there are literally hundreds of homeless vets here in Utah. One in three homeless men are veterans.
Writer James Findlay says "We were approaching this project from people had no first hand concept. and Goeckeritz went to Washington D.C. and the national archives to get video to make the stories of these men more real.
"My story was more just on the veterans themselves," Goeckeritz says. They went in with no political motivation.
"It almost writes itself, my job is to just put words to the feeling," says Findlay.
