What happened to the snow?

Winter storm warnings and advisories in place, roads pre-treated and crews on standby for snow. There's only one problem, where was the snow? The Cottonwoods saw snow. As much as a foot of new snow fell at Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. Chains and snow tires required in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons today.

Layton saw some snow along with Ogden and other communities north of Salt Lake City. The snow even made for a slow commute for some in northern Salt Lake, Davis and Weber counties.

In the Salt Lake Valley it became apparent significant snowfall would be tough. Temperatures hovered in the 40s through the afternoon and a strong southerly breeze kept pumping in the warm air. Our dewpoint temperatures remained low meaning our air was extremely dry. We watched a lot of precipitation dry up as it traveled from the clouds to the ground, never making it to the surface. It was the perfect recipe for little to no snow for Salt Lake City and points south.

So what's next? More storms in the forecast through the weekend but it looks like rain for the Valley through at least Saturday afternoon. We'll look for more snow Saturday night and Sunday when the air once again becomes cold enough for snow.
