NEW YORK CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Flights across the East Coast are grounded tonight, making it nearly impossible for anyone in major cities affected by Irene to travel.
Nearly ten-thousand flights have been cancelled since Friday, causing millions of people to put their travel plans on hold.
Starting on Monday, East Coast airports are expected to be slammed with travelers who could spend days trying to get a seat for where they need to go.
"It will take a few days," Steve Lott, spokesman for the Air Transport Association, which represents the nation’s biggest airlines, said of clearing the passenger backlog.
Passengers already with tickets on flights taking off Sunday and the rest of the week have priority over those whose flights were canceled.
Getting some places on the ground won’t be easy either.
Amtrak canceled several trains for Sunday, including the trains traveling from Florida to Virginia and one between Georgia and New York.
According to the New York Port Authority, flights out of airports there should resume sometime on Monday morning, at least by noon.
