LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah (ABC 4 News) - An avalanche near White Pines Chutes forced authorities to shut down Little Cottonwood Canyon Road until Sunday morning.
The avalanche was naturally triggered around 8 p.m. Saturday night. It dumped six feet of debris on the road.
Dozens of people were stranded at ski resorts or in their cars overnight.
"We just sat down on a couple of couches," John Scheafbauer, a tourist from Atlanta, said. "The resort was pretty accommodating."
The road was reopned around 11 a.m. Sunday morning. Poeple lined their cars eager to get through to the ski resorts.
"We are excited," Andrew Benseler said. "It's the first big snow of the season so we are going to enjoy it."
The Utah Avalanche Center said the avalanche threat would be high this weekend due to fresh snowfall. They are warning skiers and snowboarders to take extra precuations when in the backcountry.
