CENTERVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Centerville Police say they responded to a report of a shot fired in the restroom of the Carl’s Jr. at 385 North 800 West in Centerville on Tuesday.
Officers say they arrived and discovered that a gun had accidentally gone off in the bathroom after being dropped on the floor. Police say a 26-year-old man was in the bathroom using the toilet and was carrying a 40 caliber “Khar P40” auto handgun in an “inside the pants” holster. They say the man had a valid concealed weapon permit issued by the State of Utah and was lawfully in possession of the gun.
While pulling his pants up, police say the gun fell out of the holster striking the tile floor, it went off and the bullet struck the toilet, shattering it and sending sharp pieces of porcelain flying.
Police say the man was hit by some of the porcelain in the arm causing some small lacerations. South Davis Metro Fire ambulance responded and treated the man’s injuries at the scene, he was not transported.
Police say there were no other injuries but a female employee was in the adjacent women’s bathroom, heard the gun shot and was frightened. South Davis medical personnel checked her as she was experiencing chest pain and she too was released on scene.
Police say the accident would have been prevented if the man had used a secure holster. They also say a good quality firearm also should not fire if it is dropped.
No charges were brought against the man but the firearm was taken for safe keeping.
