WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4 News) – Thanksgiving night had people shopping for deals, while others were on the prowl for steals in West Jordan.

A hooded burglar was caught on camera breaking into cars near 8300 South and 4900 West.

The burglar had no idea the car owners, Tyler Francis and Megan Lettington, were watching his every move inside their house on surveillance.

“First I was looking over thinking this just can’t be happening,” Francis said. “Then I realized it was for real. There really was somebody out there.”

Francis got upset. He stood up and opened his living room window to yell out at the young man.

The video shows the burglar getting scared and running off. Three other people run away too.

The couple believes the young men likely tried to open other cars in the neighborhood.

“I think it has something to do with the holidays because the last one was a holiday as well,” Lettington said.

Lettington is referring to vandalism in the same area on Labor Day. Dozens of cars had their tires slashed.

“We don’t have money for them to keep taking our stuff or vandalizing it,” she said.

An arrest was made in the September tire slashing case, but Francis believes the same person is behind this attempted burglary.

The recent rash of crime doesn’t sit well with him.

“I don’t think I would move,” he said. “It would really make my life difficult if [the burglars] actually started taking stuff.”

He is thankful their security system came in handy Thursday night, but he knows they might not be so lucky next time.

“It kind of just makes you nervous,” Lettington added.

West Jordan Police are investigating the case. They have stepped up patrols in the neighborhood since the September tire slashing incident.

The man in the video is described as a thin white male in his late teens or early 20’s. If you have any information call West Jordan Police at (801) 840-4000.

Hi, Megan. Thanks for clarifying. But when you say you "caught this kid," I have to assume you mean on camera only. My comment stemmed from personal experience a few years ago when I was staying overnight in a warehouse owned by some friends. Around 2:30 a.m., I saw two men breaking into a warehouse right across the street, so I immediately called 911 and reported "a burglary in progress." The dispatcher had me stay on the phone while she summoned the police, and until after they had arrived and arrested them on site, all of which transpired within less than ten minutes. Once they were handcuffed and taken away, two officers walked towards the building where I was located. Only then did I turn on the lights in the office so they could see me inside and I let them in to give my account of what I had witnessed. One of the officers took the phone and concluded the call with the dispatcher himself, so it all ended well and in short order -- except for the burglars who were caught by complete surprise, not knowing I had been watching them since they first drove up to the front of that warehouse. I expect you and Tyler only acted naturally under the circumstances, but I appreciate you providing us more details. Perhaps others will be able to benefit in the future from reading of our respective experiences and act accordingly in the circumstances they might be faced with some day. Thanks again for your response, Megan. I wish you better luck in the future and, hopefully, not after the fact, as occurred in your case. I suppose that's why the WJPD determined not to send anyone out, but it would only seem reasonable for them to have explained that to you at the time of your call. :)

Hi Dennis, I am the person who caught this kid and we did call the cops at 10:16 PM that night after it happened, the cops showed up at 4:00 PM the next day. Rather than the kid stealing our stuff and not getting caught I feel we did the best for us to get him out of our vehicle. Unfortunatly I feel like the police only showed up because of the reporter calling them again and asking questions since the reporter who came out was due at 5 and West Jordan officer showed at 4. I hopes help to clarify.

I wonder how long after the burglars had been alerted and ran off before it finally dawned on these folks to call the cops. But I'm sure the burglars appreciated the heads up by being yelled at out the window, rather than chance being caught in the act by the cops had they only been called in a timely manner by someone's keen use of a surveillance camera. Burglars in handcuffs are worth more than the ones who get away and are merely caught on camera as they ran off after being asked what they were doing. I guess they didn't know the answer so they just took off. Surely I can't be the only one who had those same thoughts.
