Salt Lake City (ABC 4 News) Is Mitt Romney racist? Right now some are asking that question - while others are waiting for an answer. An online video is making the rounds and making claims that the presidential candidate and Mormon is racist.

The video is three and half minutes long and over dramatic music you hear the narrator say things like, "Mitt Romney was part of an official racist organization until he was 31 years old." The organization the video refers to is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The video goes on to point out that "it wasn't until 1978 that the Mormon Church allowed blacks to participate fully." The attack video talks about the LDS faith, but is aimed at Romney. In a clip from an interview a few years ago Romney says, "I'm proud of my faith, and it’s the faith of my fathers." That is followed by the narrator saying, "The faith of his father’s is a racist faith."

Some members of the LDS faith tell ABC 4 News that Romney will have to confront the issue and the LDS Church’s history. John Binns, who is LDS, says, "I think he should be honest. Talk about it and he should hide from it."

However, others, like Don Harwell – an African American Mormon who watched the video says, “This is not a Romney issue.” And he says, "I get a little upset that people want to put it on his head. He has never been a member of the leadership of this church." Harwell is also the president of the Genesis Group – an organization dedicated to helping black LDS Church members. He says he knows what real racism is. Then he cited several personal examples."I couldn't even get on a bus without sitting on a seat that said ‘colors to the rear.’ Did anyone rise up in Louisiana to fight that? No.” And he adds, despite what the video tries to say and what others are saying about Romney – he doesn’t believe the Republican candidate is racist. "People should take Romney for what he is and not tie the Church's baggage on him."

The LDS Mormon Cult has a racist tradition since its founding. The Cult was founded on the fraud of a 19th Century convicted con-artist, fraudster and polygamist pedophile Joseph Smith.

Thinkcritical, may I suggest mormon.org and lds.org as websites to check out as well. If you want to think critically you better check out both sides of the story. By the way, tithing is not used to enrich any individual as you suggested Joseph Smith used the tithing for. I happen to know quite a bit about LDS church history and Joseph Smith spent much of his life living in other's homes because he had used his funds to help others including blacks and indians (one of the first missions was to Native Americans who had been pushed out of their lands by Andrew Jackson and had next to nothing). The church was persecuted because they thought that they liked the indians too much! The tithing used in church history benefited the poor especially. So before you claim to know church history and the intents of Joseph Smith, get your facts straight.

I think Americans are smart enough to realize that an organization with a racist past does not make an individual within the organization a racist. Mitt was born into the religion. He probably should have left the organization since he made it sounds like he was totally opposed to their beliefs but didn't. That does not make him a racist - just weak in his decision-making. As for leejake, visit www.realmormon.com or www.4mormon.org to get some facts - you seem to lack any understanding of the Church's history. The LDS were persecuted for a number of reasons and yes, their abolitionist views were a part of it. Realize that not all LDS accepted Joseph Smith's (JS) acceptance of Blacks at the time. JS had his reasons. Use some critical thinking and piece the history together. He tried to get members to give their possession to the Church and many left. He needed money so he started a bank. The US said that was not legal so he started tithing. To increase the tithing, allow Blacks and Indians into the Church. He even started an army. Then the persecution came: illegal bank, allowing Blacks and Indians, the army, and polygamy. All this went against the law of the land (not mention the far-fetched idea of how the Church began). Some are great people but just like everything else, there are devout racists and quite a lot in my opinion.

Come on people. You know all the LDS church is not racist and never has been and part of the reason for their persecution is that they were pro-abolitionists. Romney is not a racist, this is just another attack ad trying to prey on people's emotions. Let's be reasonable here.

Romney on the Mormon racist beliefs: He claims that he was driving home from law school when he heard that the Mormon Church reversed its position on blacks as cursed, lazy, etc., etc., and was soooo overcome with joy that he wept openly and had to pull off the road... Hmmm, so he was on his way home from law school when he heard that? He was 28 in law school and 31 when the Mormon cult changed its position... LONG COMMUTE. Or, he's so fulla $#!^ his eyes are brown.

A right wing Republican is a racist? I'm shocked. Shocked I say. Well over a year ago I predicted that the religious bigots and crazy people who long ago hijacked the "the party of Abraham Lincoln" would never nominate Mormon Mitt Romney. "David Duke will be named head of the NAACP before that ever happens" I speculated at the time. It appears that I might be forced to eat a healthy dish of crow on the occasion of Mitt's victory in the New Hampshire Primary on Tuesday night. This is not to imply that the half-witted "base" of that party are happy about what happened on Tuesday . Anything but. Let me put it to you this way: The Republicans just got the news that they're pregnant and they're trying to fall in love as rapidly as possible. Assuming he will be the 2012 nominee, Romney has a few hurdles to overcome. Let's face some uncomfortable facts here, campers. Even his own people can't stand him. He doesn't come off as the most sincere guy - and that's being generous. In fact he's the most superficial candidate who ever sought the office. He reminds some people of the host of some lame, 1970's game show. He's not likely to inspire "the base" to show up at the polls en masse. Not only is his religion a hindrance, but there's also the fact that this former governor of "Taxachusetts" is seen by these knuckleheads as the worst kind of bleeding heart liberal. Isn't that a hoot? And you wonder why I get such a kick out of politics. http://www.tomdegan.blogspot.com Tom Degan

One day a man looked for a good home builder. So the man asked “Bob The Builder” to share the whereabouts of his completed homes. But “Bob The Builder” became furious at the man and said “that is an attack on my honesty!” The next day the man looked for a good Princess. So the man asked “Cinderella” to share her foot size. But “Cinderella” became very furious with the man and said “that is an attack on privacy!” The next day the man looked for a good Kitchen Chef. So the man asked “Ratatouille” to share some of his cooking. But “Ratatouille” became very furious at the man and said “that is an attack on goodwill!” The next day the man looked for a good Jobs Creator. So the man asked “Romney” to share where his created Jobs could be located. But “Romney” became very furious and said “that is an attack on all Capitalism!” So the story was RE-FRAMED against the man and told again and again by all of “Romney’s” surrogates, day after day after day! Is the “kitchen” getting a little too hot for you, Mittens……
