Woman carjacked during robbery, sexually assaulted

HOLLADAY, Utah (ABC 4 News)- Police were looking for a suspect in a robbery that led to the sexual assault of a woman on Wednesday night. 

Police say the robbery began at 11:15 p.m. when a man tried to rob the Smith's gas station at 845 East and 4500 South in Holladay.

Police say the man walked in with a gun and demanded money. 

According to UPD spokesman Justin Hoyal, that's when the clerk told the robber the shop was closed for the night and he had no money the robber allowed him to go into the main grocery shop to get cash. 

Once inside, the main grocery store the clerk called police. 

While the suspect was waiting for the clerk to come back, a woman pulled up to the gas pumps.

According to police, the man then pointed the gun at the victim and made her take him to to the America First Credit Union, 1300 East 4500 South, where he forced her to withdraw money from an ATM.

After the man had the cash, Hoyal said he forced the woman to drive a few blocks away, where he sexually assaulted her. 

Hoyal said the suspect then forced her to drive him forced the victim to go to 4300 South 900 East, where she let him out and he drove away.

UPDATE: 6:10 p.m. 

Neighbors in Holladay are worried this suspect is still walking the streets somewhere. 

"I just think women need to be more careful especially at night because you never know what going to happen," said Rhonda Jochem. 
 
Rhonda Jochem walks past the gas station where the woman was attacked. She says she's making changes to keep herself safe.  "I'll be more safe.  I'll carry like some spray with me-- mace," she said. 

We also talked with men concerned about their wives and girlfriends.  "I'll say be careful.  Don't be alone.  Don't be getting gas at night.  Do it during the day," said Melvin Pollard. 

"I think I will possibly try to be more observant, notice someone around me that maybe felt a little more suspicious," said Liz Whitney.

Many people hope police catch the suspect soon.

The suspect is a black man who weighs about 175 pounds.  He stands about 5'9" and was wearing a black hoodie and black gloves.  Call the Unified Police Department with tips.
