TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - While snow is generally measured by the foot in Utah, every inch of the white stuff directly affects how much green stuff some local stores make.
Sometimes business is up and sometimes it is down, according to Taylorsville hardware store manager Lynn Kingston of Family Stores True Value.
Kingston said a weak winter season has hurt business so he shipped merchandise back to the manufacturer.
“We sent some ice melt back and a lot of shovels back,” Kingston said. “Actually, we sent most of what we could that was a guaranteed sale because we knew it wouldn’t sell.”
Kingston said the hardware store has sold only one snow blower all season. He’s not sure if the weekend weather will boost sales.
Yet, snow is the reason Canyon Sports Rentals in downtown Salt Lake is booming.
President’s Day weekend is traditionally the company’s busiest each year.
“February kind of ramps up for us,” Kevin Rogers said. “We've been seeing a lot of traffic in the last two or three days, especially with the new snow.”
Despite the lack of snow to date, Rogers said the company is about 15% above their normal revenue this time of year. He hopes the winter storm will help keep sales stable.
“We always refer to ourselves at snow farmers, but we never have control over the crop,” Rogers added.
