WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (AP) - West Valley City is set to name a stretch of road after civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
Mayor Pro Tempore Corey Rushton and NAACP Salt Lake president Jeanetta Williams will be giving short speeches at a dedication ceremony Thursday afternoon.
The renamed stretch includes 3100 South between Decker Lake Drive and Cultural Center Drive. It leads to the Utah Cultural Celebration Center, which aims to highlight the diversity of West Valley City and the state of Utah.
Rosa Parks became a figurehead in the civil rights movement after refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Ala., bus. Parks, who was black, was arrested and convicted of violating segregation laws.
Her actions prompted a bus boycott that lasted until a court overturned the segregation rule.
