SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Move over Wall Street, here comes the Wasatch Front.
Monday, the New York Times had a long article about Utah taking hundreds of financial jobs away from New York.
There are already an estimated 1,400 Goldman Sachs workers in Salt Lake, making it one of the financial company's largest offices.
What's more, ABC 4 News is now being told, that Goldman has begun looking for even more office space here.
Monday, Utah Governor Gary Herbert told me,
"I sometimes quote the first territorial Governor, Brigham Young, who said this is the place. I am the 17th governor of Utah and I say this is the right place for business."
Now, according to the Governor, Goldman Sachs does get financial incentives to bring workers to Utah.
One report earlier this year said that Goldman potentially could get tens of millions of dollars from the state.
So, I asked the governor about that.
He told me,
"If you come and create economic expansion, you create a thousand jobs, you put more revenue into our income tax coffers, we will reward you by giving some of that money back."
Utah is able to lure workers because of its favorable business climate and lower taxes.
Also, our well educated workforce.
But not all that glitters in Utah is Gold - man...other companies may also soon decide this is the place for their workers to be.
As the governor put it,
"Lloyd Blankfein, CEO and Chairman of Goldman Sachs, told me here at lunch just a couple of months ago - Utah, the most business friendly state in America."
