SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah Department of Public Safety officials say there has been an increase in vehicle burglaries at and around the State Capitol.

Officials say there has been an increasing number of "smash-and-grab" vehicle burglaries in the area.

DPS officials say one incident involved a couple from Switzerland that parked their rented SUV near the State Capitol on August 23, and spent a short time enjoying a tour of the Capitol building.

Officials say the couple returned to their vehicle to find that a rear window had been smashed and some belongings taken, including some credit cards.

Despite calling their credit card companies, officials say their cards had already been used to purchase several thousand dollars worth of items from a couple of local downtown businesses.

DPS officials say the incident happened within approximately one half hour, and investigators wants some help in identifying an individual seen in surveillance photos who may have information concerning the burglaries.

Anyone with information that may help police was asked to contact the Utah Highway Patrol at 801-538-1111.
