SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah's wildlife director plans to retire after 33 years with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources.
Jim Karpowitz says he will retire from the agency on Dec. 1. He has served as director since 2005, making him one of the longest-serving wildlife directors in the country. He joined the agency in 1979.
The agency announced his retirement in a statement Thursday.
During his tenure, Karpowitz oversaw the development of Utah's first statewide management plans for moose and bighorn sheep. He also expanded fish hatchery and community fishing programs and the use of new wildlife capture techniques, including net guns to capture big game animals.
