SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Troopers say Utah is on track to have the lowest number of highway deaths in decades.
Utah Highway Patrol officials say 196 people have died in crashes so far this year. They say that if the motorists drive safely this holiday season, the state could beat numbers from 1974, when 228 people died, or 1959, when 205 people died.
The Utah Department of Public Safety attributes the lower numbers to better road design, education campaigns that push seatbelts and discourage drunken driving, and aggressive law enforcement.
