SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah is getting nearly $140,000 to help pay Advanced Placement test fees for low-income high school students.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Wednesday that Utah was one of 43 states getting a share of a $21.5 million federal grant.
The money should cover up to $38 per AP test, and will apply to as many as three tests per student.
The Advanced Placement program allows high school students to take college-level classes and earn college credit for the coursework if they pass an exam.
The tests cost $87 apiece, although testing company College Board offers discounts for low-income students.
Officials say the subsidies will help reduce barriers for students planning to take the exam, and will ultimately save them money on college courses.
