PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Utah county is making an effort to improve Utah's liquor laws. Thursday the county held a conference and brought in alcohol experts from across the country to help offer suggestions.
The Utah County Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment held what it calls its Utah Legislative Alcohol Policy Summit. Experts who attended showed state policy makers a few ways Utah could improve its liquor laws. Some experts supported ideas to make Utah's liquor laws stricter.
“Alcohol is not like an ordinary commodity, it’s not like laundry soap or peanut butter, you don’t want it widely available,” said David Jernigan, Johns Hopkins University, School of Public Health, Associate Professor.
However, other suggestions would make alcohol more available in Utah.
"Just one is to ease up on the license restrictions a little bit, so that people who want to have a restaurant and sell our products can do so,” said Steve Gross, Wine Institute, Director of State Relations.
Although ABC 4 is not told specifics, one of the state legislators who attended Thursday’s summit said he plans to make new changes to state liquor laws next year.
