SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 news) – Valentines Day isn’t just about love. The holiday will contribute about 18 billion dollars to the economy, making it the most important day of the entire year for some Utah businesses.

Heather Smith and her family have seen ups and downs in their Sandy chocolate business. The collapse of the economy, construction in front of their store and now: “The price of chocolate did jump last year, and we had to raise our prices.”

The past year or so makes the tomorrow crucial; they must see good sales at the Chocolate Cottage.

The cash they bring in on February 14th and the days surrounding the holiday will cover the store when business slows during the off season.

Smith said, “In the summer we don't get a lot of people in here, and we pay rent, so Valentines Day pays our rent over the summer.”

So far, it looks as if Valentines Day will be a success. Along with the rest of the country, people in Utah will spend more this holiday. The National Retail Federation says Valentines Day will contribute nearly 18 billion dollars to the economy. That’s an 8.6 percent increase from last year and the most money spent in ten years.

The hope for this family business, your sweet tooth and love will bring you into their store to spend your money on this Valentines Day.
