Utah bill: Some liquor commissioners should drink

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Alcohol consumers in Utah could have required representation on the state's liquor commission under a proposed bill.

Democratic Rep. Brian Doughty of Salt Lake City says responsible adult drinkers should have a voice in the management of the state-run liquor business.

Doughty is sponsoring House Bill 193, which is scheduled to be heard by the House Government Operations Committee Friday. The bill has previously failed in the committee but will be reconsidered.

Doughty is sponsoring an amendment that would require two commissioners to purchase alcohol at least once a year during their terms. Currently, the bill requires some commissioners to be regular drinkers who consume alcohol at least once a month.

For nearly two decades, governors have traditionally appointed at least one social drinker to the commission.
