SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah senators have voted down a bill providing additional tuition assistance for military veterans whose GI benefits have been tapped.
Democratic Sen. Luz Robles (ROW-bless) of Salt Lake City says Friday veterans would be eligible for state grants to complete a college degree after benefits provided by the federal government have expired.
Robles says the tuition assistance would help lower the high unemployment rate among veterans.
The bill would have required $250,000 to begin funding.
Republican Sen. Margaret Dayton of Orem says the assistance would remove the incentive for veterans to complete their education in a timely manner.
The Senate voted against the bill 11-14.
