SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – The Girl Scouts of Utah is appalled their centennial celebration has turned into a controversy after an Indiana state lawmaker refused to sign on to the resolution marking the big day.
The Girl Scout Mission is “to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.” But if you talk to one representative from Indiana the Girl Scouts "sexualize" young girls and promote homosexuality.
Rep. Bob Morris opposes celebrating the girl scouts centennial. After doing a “small amount” of research on the internet, Morris said, he and his wife decided to pull their two daughters out of their Girl Scout troop. He sent a letter to members of the Republican Caucus saying Girl Scouts of America is a "radicalized organization."
He writes "…abundant evidence proves that the agenda of Planned Parenthood includes sexualizing young girls through the Girl Scouts, which is quickly becoming a tactical arm of Planned Parenthood."
Morris depended himself and said, "That’s the research I found online. The Girl Scouts of America do not stand for anything. They let those girls do what they want in those troop meetings."
Both the Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood deny having any relationship.
"Girl Scouts of America nor Girl Scouts of Utah have any ties to Planned Parenthood locally or nationally,” said Kabi Catalano, Director of Marketing and Communications Girl Scouts of Utah.
We did a little web-based research of our own and found there were some websites that linked Planned Parenthood and the Girl Scouts like the Illinois Right to Life Committee. The Girl Scouts say they've heard the connection before, but this is the first time it's come from a lawmaker.
Catalano said, "Liberal, pro-abortion, teaches girls about homosexuality, no we don't do any of that. Those are all really sensitive issues that are better discussed with girls and their families in their homes.”
Catalano cheered Utah lawmakers for passing a resolution unanimously celebrating 100 years of Girl Scouts. She added they even have an honorary troop on the hill that includes female lawmakers and Representative Patricia Jones leading the way.
