SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A team of workers inside the Utah Department of Transportation's Traffic Operations Center is monitoring Utah roads with more than 913 cameras. They can each look at a mile of road in either direction giving this small team the ability to see about 2,000 miles of road in Utah with the push of a button.

Michael Evans is the control room manager. His job is to coordinate the work of four traffic operators who are constantly watching the roads.

The "a.m. or p.m. commute we really focus on those are times we want to make sure we're getting all our information out that we can," said Michael Evans.

Evans and his crew are the people behind those electronic road signs warning you of a crash ahead. His work helps you avoid crashes and congestion.

"It's definitely busy. It keeps us on our toes," said Evans. He also makes frequent visits to the weather center where a team of meteorologists are monitoring the forecast so that plow crews can prepare their plan of attack before a disruptive winter storm hits.
