SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 Sports) - In just its sixth year of existence, Syracuse High School will play for the 5A high school football championship.
Led by backup sophomore quarterback Kole Tracy, the Titans defeated perennial powerhouse Bingham, 21-16, at Rice-Eccles Stadium in the semifinals.
Tracy, filling in for Brock Anderson, who tore his Achilles tendon in last week's victory over Alta, threw two touchdown passes and ran for another. Tracy completed 10 of 19 passes for 129 yards, and rushed for another 33 yards.
Bingham took an early 7-0 lead on a 78-yard touchdown pass from Jantzen Bowles to Hayden Weichers. But the Titans took the lead right back on touchdown catches by Kiwa To'o and Dionte Mitchell.
Next up for Syracuse is the top-ranked Jordan Beetdiggers. Sophomore quarterback Austin Kafentzis threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns, while Clay Moss rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns as Jordan easily beat Lone Peak, 35-14.
Former Jordan quarterback Baron Gajkowski threw for two touchdowns in a losing effort for the Knights.
Kafentzis also rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown as the Beetdiggers raced out to a 28-7 second quarter lead and never looked back.
Jordan, which has not won a state title since 1994, will play Syracuse November 16th for the 5A championship.
