SMITHFIELD, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Brady Robbins, a former Smithfield animal control officer has been charged with cruelty to animals as well as tampering with evidence.
The charges stem from an incident that took place in June where the officer had picked up a dog that was free near the dogs home and took him to a holding kennel.
The dog was left in the kennel for 3 days according to Sgt. Nick Hidalgo, when ABC 4 spoke to him back in June.
The officer's report then goes on to say "On Monday, June 27th, I returned to the Smithfield impound and found the dog deceased. I then disposed of the carcass. Fearing repercussion from the city and public, and having not been in this situation before, I inserted a supplemental that read I had taken the dog to Cache Humane Society when the animal was actually deceased."
According to Smithfield Police Sergeant Travis Allen, the Labrador retriever named Lola went missing on Thursday June 27 from the home of Paula Purser in Hyde Park.
The dog was picked up by Robbins only a few hours later, after Robbins saw the dog near a Smithfield Subway sandwich shop.
Robbins then took Lola to the Smithfield impound area and left her in an open cage.
Allen said that Lola most likely died from dehydration and heat exhaustion.
Robbins later resigned.
There was no immediate court date set for Robbins.
