SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Sikh priest in Salt Lake is mourning the loss of several of his friends who died in Sunday's shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.
Gurmeet Singh is the priest at the Sikh Temple of Utah, but he went to school with several of the leaders of the temple in Wisconsin. A gunman opened fire there Sunday morning and killed seven people, including himself.
Singh spent Sunday praying for his friends who were wounded, and for the families of those whose lives were lost. But he was quick to say that he is not blaming the shooter.
"I don't have any hard feelings," Singh said through his translator. "I don't even know (the shooter)."
Singh does, though, have a guess about why Sikhs were targeted.
"Maybe the appearance," said Singh. "The way we look could be the cause."
Other Sikhs at the temple expressed their worries. Harish Puri just arrived in the United States two days ago.
"Shocking that a peaceful place, a religious place, can be attacked by a gunman like this," said Puri.
The priest's translator, Kanwal Mundy, gave us his own thoughts about whether he is worried a shooter could do the same thing at the Sikh temple in Salt Lake.
"I've been here eight years," said Mundy. "I've never heard, never seen anything like this. So I feel pretty safe."
Gurmeet Singh just hopes religion will bring people together through what they have in common.
"We all came from the same God," said Singh. "Everybody's equal and I hope everybody gets the same wisdom so they love each other."
