WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Officials say a crew that was drilling underground hit a gas line, forcing the evacuation of some homes in West valley City on Monday.

City officials say a construction crew was drilling at a horizontal angle to install fiber optic lines near 5923 West Nugget Drive (4340 South) when they hit a natural gas line, causing the leak.

Officials said crews were forced to use a jackhammer to cut through concrete pavement to find out where the leak is coming from.

Three homes were evacuated, while three others were already empty.

The leak was eventually contained, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.
