WEST VALLEY CITY, UT (ABC 4 News) - This week marks 3-years since Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley home.

On Tuesday evening, a small group of friends gathered to remember and also to keep their hands occupied so as to make those memories less painful. "We're making little ribbons." explained Dani Johnson.

The ribbons are purple -- Susan's favorite color.

Kiirsi Hellewell said, "It helps to get together... To talk and to share." This is a tough time of year for Hellewell. While others are celebrating, buying gifts and singing carols, she is remembering the friend she lost and how it turned her life upside down.

"We try to stay busy," she said. "We try to stay upbeat for our families."

The ribbon they made Tuesday evening will be given away to anyone who will remember Susan as well as her two boys, Charlie and Braden.

It just over a month, they will also mark one year since the murder of the boys by their father, Josh Powell.

Their deaths motivated Johnson to take action. "Something in me just said, 'I've got to do something.' I could not just sit back and not do something. That's when I really became involved instead of just following the story.

"That experience changed my life."
